The Express Nanofac Model-4E is 100 times faster than the Model-4, one to two minutes to make most products rather than three hours. This is possible by assembling a variety of programmable nanoblocks in advance. The nanofactory continuously assembles a variety of programmable nanoblocks and stores them for future use, then rapidly makes whatever product requested, by a process of programming the stored nanoblocks and joining them to form the finished product.
It can make a limited variety of programmable nanoblocks of each functional category, a compromise between generality and specialization.
Programmable nanoblocks come in all the general nanoblock types: structural, mechanical, electronic, and optical, and are under program control to reconfigure themselves for different purposes after manufacture. The programmable nanoblocks are able to change their overall shape and rearranging their components prior to joining with other blocks. This enables them to position data, transport channels, and mechanical connections at block surfaces for proper alignment with other blocks.
When fully "charged" the Express would have enough nanoblocks to make ten common products (a water pump, a flashlight, a tent) that are comprised of nearly common proportions of nanoblock types, or one special product that uses a lot of one type of nanoblock (a high powered computer, a high powered motor, a building truss).
Some products are going to require specialized nanoblocks with functions not included in the standard programmable nanoblocks and will have to be made by a Model-4 using specialized nanoblocks. Some products are going to require a higher level of optimization than can be achieved with programmable nanoblocks and will have to be made by a Model-4 using specialized nanoblocks.
